Frequently Asked Questions

FAQs

Where is your beef raised?

Our cattle are raised on our ranch in the western Upper Peninsula and on our farm in the western Lower Peninsula. We graze over 2,000 acres of our own pastureland. Most of our cattle are "born and grazed" at the ranch, and then finished and harvested at the farm in Lower Michigan.

Is your beef 100% Grassfed?

No. While our cattle spend the majority of their lives grazing our pastures, we do not feel that 100% grassfed is the best production system for Michigan's unique environment and climate. We believe that it is better for the land, the cattle, and the ultimately the beef, to supplement with sustainable feedstuffs from Michigan's diverse agricultural system.

What do the cattle eat?

In addition to the grasses and legumes that the cattle graze, we also feed grains, vegetables, and unique byproducts such as apple pulp, cherry juice, and spent grain from Michigan breweries.

How did you come up with the term Craft Beef?

Over beers, of course! I was explaining the similarities of how I raise my cattle and how craft beers are brewed to a chef friend of mine when we came up with the term. We feel that it's a great way to describe the way that better ingredients and more attention to detail result in a better product. We have trademarked the term Craft Beef to refer to our beef production system and our unique product.

Where do you ship your meats?

In the past, we have concentrated on serving local Michigan restaurants and also sold to friends and family through our farm store. We are now offering local delivery to families in West Michigan and also shipping frozen meats to 21 states from Minnesota to Massachusetts.
